My photo
Hi. I like to write, I expect you like to read. What say we strike up an acquaintance?

Graduation

It’s sad to think

That one of these days

My friends

With whom I shared

My golden days

Those whom I love

My comrades

Will have to go

Their diverse ways

It hurts to picture

That bright morn

Where there is laughter

But I mourn

For friends

I’ll never encounter

When we’re gone

It breaks my heart

Yet I’ll pull through

For I know that

With old friends

Will go old foes

And with coming days

New comrades

Life's like that, man. You lose some, so you can gain new ones.

I'm of the view there are no "friends" or "foes" in life really. There are just people. Every person has as much capacity for good as for evil. At some point you agree, at some point you disagree. I prefer to leave it at that. Assigning people into boxes labelled "friend" or "foe" does not take into account the fact that people change, and opinions change, and that your foe today might be a friend tomorrow. It does not leave room for changing minds. and shifting attitudes, and all the position-shifts that make us human. But yeah, good poem.

and yeah, your golden years are far from over:)

@ NYA, I guess you're right...truth is I'm not a big fan of change =(

@ P, I know o! I so wish I could carry half(well, maybe not have but plenty) of you to Vassar with me! *sob, sob*. Don't shake, we'll pull through, no? And in a couple of years I'll fly all o' y'all over to my private Greek island in my private jet. And you'll bring Alicia Keys and John Legend and Patti Labelle along with you when you're comin! Yay! :D

Hmm, interesting way to see it. However, I'm of a completely different view (duh! obvious much :)).
Calling someone 'friend' or 'foe' does not necessarily scratch room for error or change. On the contrary, by calling someone 'friend' you consider the possibility that people change but that you're willing to overlook this change,(as much as you may hate it) because intrinsically this person is the same person who still cares about you and how you feel.
My best friend is a more cynical bitch than she was 2 years ago and I'm more passionate/'believe in the goodness of people', however, she's still my BEST friend because I KNOW she will never purposefully hurt me. And when she does (as much as she may hate it) she puts my feelings and our friendship before her fat Princeton head and apologizes.

Granted, friendships and foeships may crumble but it does not mean that at the time at which they are considered as such they are not what they are.

And thanks! Hope college days are as golden as now!

Then does that also mean that by calling someone "foe", you consider the possibility that people change but that you're willing to overlook this change because intrinsically this person is the same person who does not care about you and how you feel?

it's a philosophical question.

Yea. If intrinsically you do not care about me, how then are you my friend? Is that not the point of friendship?

If your change is such that you begin to care about me then yay! We can all hold hands and play in the sand.

Same with friendship: change all you want, but you only stop being my friend when you decide that you do not care about me anymore; that is friendship's essence, that's the change that cannot be overlooked
